Starting yoga can feel intimidating and maybe even a little confusing. If you’re new to the mat, chances are you’re not alone in your questions. Whether you’re attempting your first pose or simply figuring out what to wear, you’re not alone.
Here are the top 5 questions new yoga students ask:
No, you definitely don’t! Flexibility is a result of yoga, not a prerequisite. Most people start yoga with tight areas in the body – usually hips, hamstrings and/or shoulders. You’ll likely be in a room full of people working on the same things. With practice, your body will adjust over time, but the real flexibility yoga teaches us is mental and that’s the ability to meet yourself where you are, without judgment.
Anything comfortable that lets you move freely. You don’t need brand-name leggings or fancy gear. A t-shirt and stretchy bottoms work just fine. Make sure your clothes aren’t too loose (so they don’t end up over your head in down dog!) and that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
I would always recommend removing your socks. I know they can provide warmth and comfort but yoga is generally done barefoot for better grip and stability on the mat.
As the newbie in class, it might feel like all eyes are on you, but most students are focused on themselves, trying to master the poses and improve their practice. Yoga encourages self-awareness, not comparison. Nobody is judging you and we all had to start somewhere!
To get the full benefits of yoga consistency is key. Two to three times a week is great, but even one class a week makes a difference when you’re starting out. Over time your body will crave more yoga and perhaps you can establish an at-home routine.
Remember, yoga isn’t a quick fix – it’s a life-long practice.
Yoga isn’t about touching your toes or doing handstands. It’s about showing up, breathing deeply and tuning in. Questions are part of the process and so is feeling a little lost at first. Stick with it. The benefits – physical, mental and emotional are worth it.
